Their stories and ideals created a new future for women across the nation. In 1922, seven young emerging Butler educators founded Sigma Gamma Rho here in Indianapolis. “This empowerment allows our founder’s legacy to flourish through us.” “ push me to continue to be successful,” McClimon said. Laila McClimon, sophomore youth and community development major and president of Butler’s ALMIGHTY Alpha Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho, speaks on how this resilience even during pushback inspires her now. The founders of Sigma Gamma Rho proved to be resilient as they faced prejudice and hatred walking to and from school. African American students faced discrimination daily.Īt the time of the founding of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., the Grand Dragon of the KKK lived right across the street from the new sorority’s headquarters. In 1927, Butler established a quota of only admitting 10 Black students annually. At least one member of the Butler University Board of Regents was known to support the KKK. While Butler accepted Black students beginning in their inaugural year of 1855, in the first decades of the 20th century, white supremacist ideologies strengthened. In addition, the Tolerance newspaper, which was published by the Chicago American Unity League, exposed over 12,000 Marion County Klan members. In 1928, the paper won a Pulitzer Prize for its investigative work against the Klan. They revealed key city and state government officials that were Klan members. The Indianapolis Times began an initiative to expose the Klan to the public. When it comes to how we hung them (they’re lack shelves from Ikea), we decided to line the bottom shelf up with the cabinet on the left of the shot above (18″ above the counter) so that they all related to one another. These pictures don’t even do it justice – it’s literally at least twice as bright and feels a lot bigger and more open as well. Here’s how it looked a few weeks ago after we removed the wallpaper.Īnd here it is from the same POV now, after removing the cabinets, re-hanging the crown molding, patching/priming/painting the walls, trim, and ceilings, upgrading the lighting, and hanging those new shelves of ours. We still have a few major things on the list (like painting those cabinets) but the shelves make such a gigantic difference as opposed to the dark cabinetry that used to hang on either side of that window. The no-Beyonce consolation prize is that we finally got the Ikea floating shelves up in the kitchen, and it suddenly feels like we’re turning a corner. One-way tickets on Alaska Airlines for domestic flights start as low as 49, enabling travelers to explore locally on a budget. Alaska Airlines also services Hawaii and Alaska in addition to its stop on the country’s mainland. On budget airlines they also charge for the smallest items. Alaska Airlines is based out of SeaTac, Washington, and flies to 70+ domestic destinations across the United States. It's typical airplane food and for the most part, it is better to bring your own on board. If you think economy class on a regular airline is a tight fit, you haven't seen anything!Īlso, the food on these planes tends to be expensive, at $10-20 a meal. The seating on these planes are usually very cramped, as they assign minimal leg room to each person in order to fit in more seats. I have flown on budget airlines and they are a great way to save money, but I wouldn't recommend them for any flights over a few hours long. I think flying is terrible at the best of time, with the dry air and bad food.Ĭan anyone recommend a good place to search for budget fairs and learn about what they offer? Or should they just come up in a regular ticket search online? You can also filter for flights based on your budget, such as looking for cheap flights under 200. Alongside Hoff and Young are Sarah Jones as Sadie, Henry’s older sister, Coral Peña as Cora, La’s romantic interest, Bruce Altman as Henry’s father Toby and Meg Gibson as Henry’s mother Gloria. Hoff as Muz, Henry’s two best friends whom he describes as “a trio of unclassifiable misfits”. Other cast members include Kara Young as La and C.J. He no longer is the awkward teenager we see at the start of the film. His character’s emotions rarely fluctuate, so we don’t get a chance to see any dramatic progression until towards the end when he finally has his moment to be open and free. The same can’t be said, unfortunately, for Abrams as Henry. Her flexibility as an actress to go from dramatic and vulnerable to laid back and open is impressive. She is captivating and draws your attention immediately as the not quite so ‘damsel in distress’ (after Henry learns of the car crash she was in leaving her mentally and physically scarred). Reinhart’s execution of Grace is brilliant. They pull you into their world, into their story and you don’t want to leave until that story has been told. The feeling you get when you meet Henry and Grace for the first time makes you want to answer the questions ‘who are they?’ and ‘what’s their story?’. It’s filled with heartbreaking secrets and a rollercoaster of emotions. Yet this isn’t your typical ‘boy-meets-girl’ kind of film. Why is that? Instantly, they have a connection and it soon becomes intriguing to watch. He’s a writer but can’t talk, yet she can talk but can no longer write. They are automatically drawn to each other with their love and passion for literature, poetry and the language of romance. One day he meets transfer student Grace Town, and from the get go, you know she has a story to tell, with her quietness and the resilience she has for keeping personal information just that – personal. However, he believes he is a hopeless romantic even though he’s never actually been in love before. His life seems ‘normal’, mundane and simple. The film sees Lili Reinhart ( Riverdale and Hustlers ) as Grace Town and Austin Abrams ( The Walking Dead, Paper Towns and Euphoria ) as Henry Page, with Reinhart also serving as an executive producer alongside Sutherland and Jamin O’Brien.Ĭhemical Hearts is a story about Henry Page, a 17-year-old high school student who has his eye on becoming the next Editor-in chief of his school newspaper. Krystal Sutherland’s brilliant debut is equal parts wit and heartbreak, a potent reminder of the bittersweet bliss that is first love.Written and directed by Richard Tanne, Chemical Hearts is based on the book Our Chemical Hearts by Krystal Sutherland. And yet, this isn’t your average story of boy meets girl. It’s obvious there’s something broken about Grace, but it seems to make her even more beautiful to Henry, and he wants nothing more than to help her put the pieces back together again. But when Grace and Henry are both chosen to edit the school paper, he quickly finds himself falling for her. Grace isn’t who Henry pictured as his dream girl-she walks with a cane, wears oversized boys’ clothes, and rarely seems to shower. Then Grace Town walks into his first period class on the third Tuesday of senior year and he knows everything’s about to change. Instead, he’s been happy to focus on his grades, on getting into a semi-decent college and finally becoming editor of his school newspaper. He fancies himself a hopeless romantic, but the slo-mo, heart palpitating, can’t-eat-can’t-sleep kind of love that he’s been hoping for just hasn’t been in the cards for him-at least not yet. John Green meets Rainbow Rowell in this irresistible story of first love, broken hearts, and the golden seams that put them back together again. Montgomery County was surveyed and organized in 1869 the governor appointed commissioners June 3. Like the Osages, the Bunkers thought they were beyond the boundaries of civilization. In 1867 Frank and Fred Bunker established a primitive cattle camp on the west side of the Verdigris south of the confluence. This treaty conceded white settlement on land in the eastern part of what is now Montgomery County. As early as 1866, the Osages were forced to cede tracts at the eastern and northern edges of the reservation. After the Civil War ended, the Osage lands were coveted as the largest and last reserve of good land in the eastern part of the state. The reservation had been established in 1825. When Kansas was admitted to the Union as a state in 1861, the Osage Indian reservation occupied a large tract of land near the southern border. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, in Canada, after successfully capturing two forts and the city of Montreal.
